I stay at my boyfriend’s apartment often, and there are 4 visitor parking spaces. How long am I able to park my car there? – Amy, NSW

Q: I stay at my boyfriend’s apartment often, and there are 4 visitor parking spaces. How long am I able to park my car there? Most spaces are often vacant. One of the owners living in the complex has bumped into me twice in the carpark over a 6 month period and says I’m not considered a visitor so cannot use that space. I’m not on the lease and I don’t pay any rent. Am I not allowed to use that space at all or can I park there every weekend?

A: It is probably best to check the apartment complex’s by-laws regarding parking, as the by-laws might define the term ‘visitor’ in a specific manner. Unless the by-laws restrict a regular visitor from parking in the visitor’s spot or a time limit is noted on a sign, you should be able to park in a visitors spot.
