Both my parents are 75 years old with disability access certificate. They are unable to get out of their car due to the narrow parking space allocated to them. Can they request to park in a marked disabled parking space where currently others are parking without any disability? – Ashwini, NSW

Q: My parents live a 200+ complex strata building. There are several parking spaces and allocations for each unit.

Both my parents are 75 years old with disability access certificate. They are unable to get out of their car due to the narrow parking space allocated to them. More so now that neighbour has been parking irresponsibly ie car is not aligned in a proper manner thus further limiting door space.

Can they request to park in a marked disabled parking space where currently others are parking without any disability?

A: We recommend you check your by-laws first to see what specifications your strata property has outlined for the use of disabled parking spots.

It would be a good idea to speak with your strata committee or strata manager and explain the situation to them so a solution can be worked out for your parents.
