Our front door handle broke off. Our guests went to the store and bought a new door handle but it’s getting a build up of salt just like our last one and the caretakers never clean them. The hinges on our 15-year-old security screen door are now rusty and the handle won’t latch. What can we do when we’re not in their rental pool and being ignored? – Rosemary
Question: Our front door handle broke off. Our guests went to the store and bought a new door handle as they couldn’t leave the unit unlocked and it was a public holiday so the caretakers or building managers were not there. This handle is getting a build up of salt just like our last one and the caretakers never clean them. The hinges on our 15-year-old security screen door are now rusty and the handle won’t latch, so it does nothing to protect our belongings. What can we do when we’re not in their rental pool and being ignored?

Answer: Hi Rosemary, before you read our answer please note by-laws vary in every scheme and legislation is different in every Australian state. If you’re property is located in New South Wales, the owners corporation are responsible for the doors leading to common areas. It’s their responsibility to look after the security of the scheme. If you feel you are not being represented by your building manager, we would recommend escalating the matter to the strata manager so he or she can address the committee on your behalf.
