Water charges in our block are a standard charges regardless of water use. Sustainable water use should be part of all of our lives. Is there a way to measure usage per unit? – Alan, NSW

Q: Water charges in our block are standard charges regardless of water use. Sustainable water use should be part of all of our lives. Is there a way to measure usage per unit?

A: The way to measure water usage per unit would be through a process known as “retrofitting meters”. This means that water meters are fitted into the existing plumbing system to measure each lot owner’s individual use.

This however may not be feasible for all strata properties as it will heavily depend on the location of plumbing in the strata property. It is also a very expensive bit of work to undertake.

It may be a more effective exercise to hold water conservation education days on common property, where all residents are invited and encouraged to participate. This will go a long way in both enhancing community living and educate residents on the importance of sustainable water usage.
