How do I find out that I am being overcharged with my levies? I have been told that I am paying for a car space, but my car space has been given to another lot owner. -Ahlam, QLD

Q: How do I find out that I am being overcharged with my levies. I have been told that I am paying for a car space, but my car space has been given to another lot owner. Please help as I am so stressed out and need advice. As the new Committee are indirectly putting pressure on me and trying to push me out of where I am parking my car, which is under a ramp, which was previously approved by the previous committee a long time ago. Please advise as I desperately need help. Thanks in advance.

A: It is recommended that you check your strata levy notice first. This will allow you to see a breakdown of where your levies are going and what you are paying towards in the levy.

Another avenue that may help is to have a look at your strata plan. This document should be able to outline your parking space and where it lies on the property, which may come in handy if you are trying to prove that a certain parking spot is your property.

Unfortunately, if there is a space that was designated to you by the previous committee, the new committee may have voted to overturn that decision. You can try to bring the matter up at your next meeting to have it re-instated if that is the case.

If you have tried and are unsuccessful but feel that you are being treated unfairly, you may want to take the case up with Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT).
