We are being asked if we wish to install a keyless Digital Door Lock and have been given quite an expensive quote. Can individual owners get this installed to standard by a cheaper certified locksmith? – Michele, QLD

Q: We are being asked if we wish to install a keyless Digital Door Lock and have been given a quote which we believe is very expensive. Can individual owners get the same installed to standard by a certified locksmith which is very much cheaper or must we only get them to do it even though it is nearly double the price.

A: This will depend on a few factors – does your building have a caretaker, and are you in a letting pool?

In some cases, keyless locks are arranged for the letting pool, and this would not be a body corporate issue, in which case best to discuss with your agent.

If, however, the keyless digital door lock is being proposed for all owners, and you feel you can make your own arrangement at a lower cost, you would be best to discuss with your strata manager to explore any options to ‘opt-out.’
