I wish to enquire about whether or not my body corp insurance will continue to cover hail or storm damage to my solar panels, or has this now changed? – Phil, QLD
Q: I wish to enquire about whether or not my body corp insurance will continue to cover hail or storm damage to my solar panels, or has this now changed?
A: The answer to this question really depends on whether the roof on which the solar panels are installed appear on your lot’s title or not. If the roof does appear on your title (ie it’s not common property, and it only services your lot), you will need to add it to your personal insurance and then contact your insurer to confirm whether the policy covers storm and hail damage.
If you had to gain permission from your body corporate to install the solar panels on a roof that is considered common property and the panels only service your lot, you are likely responsible for repairs and maintenance. This may mean your body corporate’s insurance does not cover any damage to the solar panels. We recommend getting in touch with your body corporate manager and consulting them regarding your policy’s coverage of solar panels (or lack thereof).
