I am wondering if I would be breaking the law if I keep my fridge on our balcony – Farah, NSW

Q: I am wondering if I would be breaking the law if I keep my fridge on our balcony. Our balcony cannot be viewed from the street. Only one neighbour can see our balcony, and she took a photo of it without our permission and sent to the agency. Our unit is on the backside of our building.

A: While owners are responsible for the maintenance of balconies, the strata committee can be responsible for the look of the apartment block’s balconies. This means they can dictate, via by-laws, how each apartment’s balcony can look. Check your by-laws to seek clarification regarding rules about your balcony’s appearance, and what you can and cannot have on it. If you require further clarification, we recommend speaking to either your strata manager or a strata committee member.
