Q: I own a unit in an eight-unit complex, I am currently leasing it out to tenants. Enquiring about permission to conduct a business within the unit in place of leasing out privately.

A: Generally speaking, conducting business within a residential strata scheme is prohibited because of the impact it can have on parking spaces, noise levels, and some more serious topics. Factors such as public liability and its increases on insurance premiums may also arise when businesses are involved in strata properties. Council zoning may also be an issue, which will disallow you from running a business within the unit.

For more information, we recommend checking your strata property by-laws, speaking to your strata committee, or speaking to your strata manager about it.
